Medications

By Mark Labelle

Just a couple of anecdotes from a person that swore he would never take drugs on a daily basis.

Like a lot of men in their late 40's I found out I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol (158/95 and 358 trigl.).
So the doc says you take these or you will die, I said okay.

She gave me Pravachol for the high triglycerides, Zestoretic for the BP, and because I smoke and she wanted me to quit she prescribed Wellbutrin.

The Wellbutrin was a double whammy for me. One because every time I called to speak with anyone about it I had to quickly say "I am not depressed, I am taking it to quit smoking", and two because it made me loopy (unable to concentrate on anything).

My relationship with the wellbutrin started on the wrong foot, because I am an idiot. By that I mean I rarely read directions. The Doc said, "take one tomorrow and for the next three days, then start taking two a day" so I did. On the morning of the fourth day I took two 150mg pills. Then for some reason I decided to read the papers that came with the drugs........

It said, "taking more than the recommended dose will increase your risk of having a seizure. The usual maximum dose is 300-400 mg per day (maximum single dose 150-200mg.)" OH OH I thought, I just took 300 mg. Then on the next page it said "this medication should not be used if you are suddenly stopping regular use of sedative (including alcohol) which can cause high risk of seizures.

The alcohol thing would not have been a problem except I was recently laid off, started to drink nightly, and decided to stop drinking at all for a while. Needless to say I was on the phone with the national poison hotline faster than President Obama can spend a dollar.

Obviously, I survived, but I recommend that if you use this drug read everything about it before you start. For me the drug did not help me quit.

Pravachol on the other hand was worse. After taking a 20mg tab for two days my symptoms started. Not sure if I can explain how bad they were here but I will try.... Now in fairness the drug sheet says "heartburn, headache, or dizziness may occur".

I have had these symptoms before, no big deal I thought, well I was wrong. The heartburn warning was a severe understatement... picture a heating element deep in your chest, running from one side to the other. Now turn on the electricity and heat up that element... there you go... the most excruciating pain I think I ever felt. The good thing (tongue in cheek) is the symptoms seemed to occur mostly when I was trying to sleep.

I have broken several bones, had my arm almost severed off, and was hit in the head with a sledge hammer (hold the jokes), but I had never felt a pain that was as exquisite as this pain was. The benefit I received from this pill was the knowledge that I cannot take this drug. I stopped taking it, then told the doctor.

I hope your experiences are not as severe as mine, and I hope this article helps someone.

Mark
